NorthDNS
Getting started

A European alternative to Cloudflare DNS and Cloudflare Tunnel

What NorthDNS offers compared with Cloudflare for DNS, proxy, tunnels and email, the differences to know and how to migrate your zone.

In short

NorthDNS covers the most common Cloudflare uses for a domain: authoritative DNS, DNSSEC, an HTTPS proxy with caching and WAF, and tunnels for local services. It also includes email with your own domain. Infrastructure and operator are in Europe.

Differences to know

  • NorthDNS uses two nameservers and edge nodes in Italy and the Netherlands, not a global anycast network: for mostly European audiences the difference is small; for worldwide traffic Cloudflare remains more distributed.
  • It does not register domains: your domain stays with your registrar.
  • We do not promise protection from volumetric DDoS attacks: WAF, rate limiting and a browser check are available.

Migrating from Cloudflare

  1. Export the zone from Cloudflare (DNS → Records → Export).
  2. Import it into NorthDNS from the domain’s DNS page.
  3. If DNSSEC was active on Cloudflare, disable it and remove the DS at the registrar before switching.
  4. Change the nameservers as described in Delegating a domain.
  5. Turn the proxy back on for website records and, if needed, enable DNSSEC on NorthDNS.

Instead of Cloudflare Tunnel or ngrok

NorthDNS tunnels publish a local service on a stable HTTPS subdomain of your own domain, with an agent for Linux, Windows and macOS and without opening ports.
