Importing mail from your old provider

Copy folders, messages and Sieve filters from your old IMAP server to a NorthDNS mailbox, without duplicates.

What is copied

Folders, messages with their dates and flags (read, flagged…) and, if the old server supports ManageSieve, your filters. Messages already present, identified by Message-ID, are not duplicated, so you can run the import again.

Starting the import

  1. Create the mailbox on NorthDNS first.
  2. Open the domain → Email → the mailbox → Import from another server.
  3. Enter the old provider’s IMAP server, port and security, its username and password, and the NorthDNS mailbox password.
  4. For filters, tick the option and enter the ManageSieve server and port (usually 4190, with STARTTLS).

Passwords are only used during the transfer and are never stored. The import status stays visible on the page.

Common settings

  • IMAP: port 993 with SSL/TLS, or 143 with STARTTLS. Port 995 is POP3 and will not work.
  • Gmail and Outlook often require an “app password”.
  • Gmail and Outlook do not expose ManageSieve: filters must be recreated manually.

After the import

Once you have checked the messages, update the MX records (with Configure automatically) if you have not already: new mail will then arrive at NorthDNS.
